Are these holiday bingo card sets suitable for blackout bingo?

Blackout bingo is when you play until someone covers all the images on their bingo card.

This can be challenging when you have large groups as you need plenty of different cards. But it’s not just the number of bingo cards. You want lots of calling cards too.

To avoid everyone covering their full bingo card at the same time, you need more calling cards than you have spaces on your card.

The free printable bingo cards in this post each have 24 squares plus a free space.  In order to play blackout bingo, you want many more than 24 unique calling cards.

3 sets of free christmas bingo printable cards have 24 calling cards

Since each bingo card has 24 images, with 24 calling cards, everyone will “blackout” their card at the same time.  This is not a bad thing if you’re playing with little kids!

They will get their rows, columns and whatever other winning “bingos” at different times.  But when it comes to filling their entire sheet, all players will do this at the same time.

It’ll be a joint win! Which is why this will be good for little ones who don’t like to lose.

This applies to the following sets:

  1. Cute Christmas characters 30 card bingo set
  2. Parts of a snowman 30 card bingo set
  3. Black and white color-in 30 card bingo set

2 sets of christmas bingo cards have 36 calling cards

If you want to play blackout bingo, pick the bingo card sets with 36 calling cards.  It’ll take longer to play the game and players will cover their full bingo cards at different times.

The 2 sets with 36 calling cards are:

  • Classic Christmas bingo cards
  • Naughty elf bingo cards

These are ideal free christmas bingo cards for large groups who want to play blackout bingo.

How to play Christmas bingo

Christmas bingo is a classic holiday party game that’s perfect for all ages and can be played with a minimum of 2 players.  Each christmas bingo printable free pdf has 30 unique bingo boards, meaning up to 30 people can play.

Here’s how to play:

1. Print out the bingo cards

Use our free printable Christmas bingo cards for up to 30 players.  If you have fewer players then select fewer bingo cards to print.

2. Print the bingo calling sheets and cut each image out

Then shuffle them and place them in a pile.

3. Distribute the cards

Give each player a bingo card and a handful of bingo markers, pen/pencil or other form of bingo dauber.

4. Call out the bingo items

Appoint a bingo caller who’s job it is to call out the items on the bingo cards, one at a time. For example, “Santa Claus,” “snowman,” or “reindeer.”  This will be the simplest way for a large party or class full of kids.

Alternatively you can place all the calling cards into a box or basket in the middle of the table face down and players can take it in turns to pick up an image.  This works well for small groups.

5. Mark off the items

As each item is called out, players should mark off that item on their bingo card. The first player to mark off five items in a row (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) and shout “bingo!” wins that round.

6. Keep playing!

You can keep playing and allow other players to mark off five items in a row and have a turn at shouting bingo.  You can play until someone gets a “full house” and has marked off all their items.  If you want to play to this point, this is called “blackout bingo”.

If you want to keep playing, simply reset the bingo cards and continue calling out items.

Alternative bingo options

Normally, 5 items in a row counts as a bino win.  But you can change this as you please. Here are some ideas:

  • 4 corners – cover the 4 corners of the bingo card
  • 2×2 square – cover a square 2 square wide, 2 squares high
  • 3×3 square – cover a square 3 square wide, 3 squares high (with or without the middle square covered)
  • Plus sign – cover the middle row and middle column over the free space to make a plus sign
  • X marks the spot – cover the two diagonals over the free space to make an X sign
  • Blackout bingo – cover the entire bingo board – see the note in the FAQ section

Bingo marker options

Players can simply mark off items with a pen or pencil if you’ve printed the bingo cards onto card or paper.  Or use a dry erase marker if you’ve laminated them.

But bingo dabbers or daubers would be better.  There’s no need to stick with traditional bingo chips.  It’s the holiday season after all!

use candy canes as markers with your christmas bingo pdf

Here are some different options – there are plenty of edible bingo markers, sure to go down well with kids:

  • counters or small building blocks
  • play coins
  • bottle tops
  • dot marker
  • miniature disco balls
  • themed erasers
  • Hershes Kisses
  • M&Ms
  • Jelly beans
  • Haribo
  • candy canes
  • marshmallows

Bingo winner prizes

If you’re using edible bingo markers then these can double as the prize when a line, or the full bingo card, has been completed.  If you’re playing bingo just to have fun at home, then there’s no need to complicate matters by adding more prizes.

But if it’s an activity as part of a festive party, then you may feel the need to offer fun themed prizes.  Here are some ideas:

  • festive stationery
  • candy canes
  • small books (I have a box of Mr Men books great for party favors and prizes)
  • themed keyring
  • festive craft kit
  • holiday themed playdough
  • gingerbread building kit

FAQS on printable Christmas bingo cards and playing bingo

How many bingo cards are there?

Each set of free christmas bingo printable cards has 30 unique cards, meaning a maximum of 30 people can play.

Can I adapt the Christmas bingo for groups larger than 30?

If the 30 unique bingo cards aren’t enough, you can still play with a few adaptations.  Print the 30 free printable christmas bingo cards then print the extra you need.  If you print 10 extra, to accomodate 40 players, you’ll have 20 identical cards in the set.

To make the cards different, you can increase the number of “free spaces” by using stickers to cover some of the images on the bingo card.

Use 2 or 3 stickers randomly placed on all 40 bingo cards.  Ensure the identical bingo cards have stickers in different places.  Now you have 40 unique bingo cards.

How Do I Print a PDF?

You’ll need a program that supports PDFs. Adobe Acrobat is a good option.

  1. Open the PDF by double-clicking on the link.
  2. You should see a “Print” button either in the toolbar or under the “File” menu. Click on it.
  3. In the print dialog box that appears, select the correct printer and adjust the page range according to how many bingo boards you want.
  4. Once you’ve reviewed the print settings click on the “Print” button to start printing.

A little about me

Mom of 4 kids, baby sleep expert plus home organisation and kids activities and crafts

Hi, I'm Sarah

Mom of four outrageously gorgeous Littles.  Yup, four!  The twins are now two and that title still brings me out in a cold sweat… Yet I’m just as determined to give them the best without losing my mind.  I reckon it’s possible!  Most days.

I love a challenge and have to find out they ‘why’, ‘what’ or ‘how to’  –  there are rather a lot of these when it comes to kids…

I also love, love, love things to be neat and tidy and just so.   The Littles normally have other ideas!
