Either way, this post should have you covered.

BASSINET FOR SMALL SPACES FEATURE

What is a bassinet and why use one?

A bassinet is a small bed for a newborn baby that can be easily moved.  They’ve become increasingly popular ever since the APP recommended that babies spend their first 6 months in the same room as a parent or caregiver when asleep.  The aim of roomsharing is to protect against SIDS.

It must be roomsharing, not bedsharing.  The latter does the opposite and puts a baby at an increased risk of SIDS, due to the possibility of overheating and/or suffocation while in the bed and under a duvet with an adult.

Using a bassinet allows parents to keep their baby close by in their own room, but in their own sleep space.

A bassinet can also be easily maneuvered around different parts of the house as necessary, during the day, for naps.

What is the difference between a co-sleeper and a bassinet?

A co-sleeper is a bed for newborns that lies alongside an adult bed.  One side is removable so once attached to the adult bed, the co-sleeper simply becomes an extension.

In this way it provides a newborn with their own separate safe sleep space, while being at arms length to mom or dad.

A co-sleeper can also termed a sidecar or bedside sleeper, or even a co-sleeper bassinet.

Co-sleeper vs. bassinet?

Each has advantages and disadvantages.  A co-sleeper tends to be the most practical for feeding and soothing baby at night, since you don’t even need to get out of bed.

However, there are now some great bassinets that also offer this option – stay tuned!

Bassinets tend to be smaller and more portable than co-sleepers, making them easy to move from the room with you, day and night.

Are bassinets safe? Can they cause SIDS?

A 2008 research study investigated an increased risk of SIDS and bassinet use, concluded:

The risk of sudden unexpected death in infancy in bassinets can be reduced by following American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidelines, including use of supine positioning and avoidance of soft bedding within the bassinet. Additionally, parents must assure that the bassinet is mechanically sound, and that objects that can lead to suffocation are not in or near the bassinet.

In this study, the majority (85%) of deaths were due to anoxia, asphyxiation or suffocation.  A front or side sleeping position, too soft a mattress, pillows, loose blankets or other items in, or falling into, the bassinet were contributory factors, rather than the bassinet itself.

In 9 cases, a bassinet malfunction was thought in part to blame.  A broken leg, wooden slat or stabilizing clip caused collapse of the bassinet and/or movement of the mattress.  This caused the infant to slip into an unsafe position, where breathing could be obstructed, such as wedged against the side of the bassinet.

So, are bassinets safe? And can they cause SIDS?

The answers are yes and no, respectively, as long as safe sleep guidelines are followed and the bassinet is in good order.

In terms of safe sleep guidelines, most importantly, baby must sleep on the back on a firm flat sleeping surface with no pillows, soft toys or loose bedding.

Also ensure the bassinet, small or otherwise, is in good working order and adheres to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) guidelines.

CPSC guidelines & safety standards for a bassinet

For safety, the SPSC stipulates the following:

  • the bassinet base is wide
  • the bassinet frame is sturdy
  • the surfaces are smooth – hardware is not protruding
  • the legs lock into place to prevent accidental collapse
  • the mattress is firm and fits snugly

You also need to take note of the manufacturer’s guidelines on maximum weight allowance, to avoid overload and collapse.

Does a bassinet need mesh sides?

There are guidelines in reference to the side of cribs, stating that bumpers should not be used to avoid suffocation if an infant gets wedged against the crib side.  However, so far there are no guidelines for bassinet sides. They do need to have mesh sides.

But, following the study above, when becoming wedged against the side of the bassinet due to unsafe practices or a malfunctioning bassinet was a cause of death, researchers stated that a bassinet with mesh sides or other air-permeable material, may be “preferable” (Source).

a small bassinet for a newborn will be grown out of quickly
Is this a bassinet or a basket?! Either way, it’s too small, since the baby is touching the sides with both hands and feet

How long can baby sleep in a bassinet?

There are three factors that determine how long a baby can sleep in a bassinet:

  1. until they reach the maximum weight recommended by the manufacturer
  2. until they no longer comfortably fit i.e. both arms and feet are touching the sides
  3. until they start to push up on their hands, which could overbalance it

You need to stop using the bassinet when either of these 3 factors come into play.

Most bassinets are suitable up to 5 months old, but it depends on the baby.  Large, heavy babies will outgrow a bassinet sooner than smaller, lighter ones.

Of course, it also depends on the size of the bassinet.  The smaller the bassinet, the quicker it will be outgrown.  It’s all very well finding a small bassinet only to find that your little one has outgrown it by 3 months!

So when looking for the best bassinet for small spaces, design is important – you want the maximum space for your baby, while taking up the smallest floor space.

How long should a baby sleep in a bassinet in your room?

As per AAP guidelines, babies should stay in the room with a parent or caregiver until 6 months.

Do you even need a bassinet?

It’s personal choice whether or not you have a bassinet for your baby.  You can skip both a bassinet and co-sleeper and use a crib from the get-go.  If your bedroom is large and has room for a crib, there’s no reason why your baby can’t sleep there from birth.

However, in order to stick to the recommendation of staying in the same room as baby for the first 6 months for day naps too, this limits you to the bedroom.

In the early days, this will work perfectly as you can get some rest when your baby naps.  Also, there will be plenty of times when your baby naps on top of you, so it really won’t matter whether you have a bassinet or where the crib is!

However, when the time comes, you’re going to want and need to do other things elsewhere in the house.  You probably won’t want to be stuck in the room where the crib is set up.

With all four of my babies, I’ve found a bassinet invaluable, allowing me to move them from room to room as necessary.

Can I put my baby in his own room at 4 months?

It’s like that your baby will have outgrown the bassinet a few weeks before 6 months.  However, they still need to sleep in the same room as you in line with safe sleep advice.  Then what?

For day naps:

Consider a pack and play or playard – these are portable baby beds designed for babies up to 3 years old.  They are of course big and bulky, not nearly as easy to move around, like a bassinet.  However, if you can find a spot where it can live downstairs until your baby reaches 6 months, then that’s ideal.

a day bed in baby's room means you can still sleep in the same room once they need to move into a crib
A day bed in the nursery allows you to sleep there at night to stick with room-sharing advice while baby is still under 6 months but needs to move into a

At night:

If you don’t have room for a crib or pack and play in your room, highly likely given you want to find out about small bassinets, this is a good time to move your baby into their own room, as long as there’s room for one parent to sleep there too until baby reaches 6 months.

A fold-up mattress like this was how we dealt with the situation at night.

How to choose the best bassinet for a small space

Finding the best bassinet for a small space can be a bit daunting when there’s so much to choose from.

First things first: decide the specific role of the bassinet.  Here are some questions to ask yourself:

Will the bassinet be your one and only?

I.e. it’ll go in your bedroom and you’ll move it around the house in the day.  This can work really well if you live on one level, but is harder to achieve if you have stairs.

Will the bassinet live permanently in your bedroom?

In which case you’ll need a second bassinet or another safe sleep option for your newborn in the day.

Will you be out and about a lot?

If so, you may need the bassinet to be portable, or you may want to consider buying a separate newborn travel bassinet.

Now for some other important considerations:

External dimensions

If you have a small space, bedroom or apartment in which the bassinet must fit, then it goes without saying dimensions when erected are important.  Erected dimensions are included for all the recommended small bassinets below, but you also need consider the size of the stand.

Age & maximum weight recommendation

Smaller bassinets with lower weight allowances will be grown out of sooner.

Does it have wheels?

This will make the bassinet easy to move from room to room, but won’t be that helpful if you want to move it from one floor to the next.

Does the bassinet remove from the base?

This is the most portable option, allowing you to easily move the bassinet wherever you need to.

Does it fold or packaway easily?

If your space is small, then the ability to fold the bassinet away may be what you need.

How heavy is it?

A lightweight bassinet will be more portable for moving from room to room.

Does it follow safe sleep guidelines?

Does it offer a firm, flat sleeping surface?

Does it have mesh panels?

These are not a requirement according to safe sleep guidelines, yet at least.  There’s the suggestion that breathable mesh panels or sidewalls can help protect against SIDS.

In addition, mesh fabrics normally increase visibility, particularly when you’re in bed and your baby is at eye level.

Does the height adjust?

If you’re looking to put it by your bed, consider an adjustable height bassinet.

What additional features does it offer?

Does it have space for burp clothes or any storage options?

Does it offer more sophisticated features, like music, soothing sounds or an option for sway motion?

There are several multifunctional bassinets around, including in this list.

Note that these types of additional features can sometimes compromise external dimensions.

BEDSIDE bassinets for small spaces

If you want your baby super close, so you can comfort and feed her easily at night, but a cosleeper isn’t going to fit, you need one of these bassinets for small spaces. The bassinet stand is designed to fit partially under the bed.  This means you don’t need as much space between the wall and your bed.

The bassinet itself then hovers over the bed slightly – your baby can’t be much closer than that!

Overall this is a lovely bassinet, it’s super sturdy and ideal for narrow bedrooms with limited space.  It’s available at a great price too.

Any downsides?

This bassinet is lacking some of the fancier features  – you can’t rock it and it doesn’t vibrate for example – but since it’s one of the more budget-friendly options, this bassinet is not one to overlook.

a lovely small bedside bassinet for small spaces

What’s to love about this bedside bassinet for small spaces?

This is another great option for a bedside sleeper for that small gap down the side of your bed.  The lowering bedside wall will make getting your baby in and out of the bassinet so much easier, ideal for those middle-of-the-night feeds.

Although it doesn’t have wheels, it has sliders built into the bottom of the frame allowing it to glide effortlessly over carpet and other floor surfaces.  This means you can move it away from the bed easily and into other rooms as needed.

One other advantage over the previous bedside bassinet is its larger weight limit of 20lbs.  This means you’ll be able to use it until your baby turns 6 months, at which point you can safely move them into their own room.

All in all, this one has to be the best baby bedside bassinet for a small space.

Any downsides?

Only the price, which at $200 is fairly steep considering it doesn’t have some of the more tech features of other expensive bassinets.

this is a great baby bed for small spaces

What’s to love about this bedside bassinet?

This is a small bassinet with a few extra features.  The ability to remove it from it’s stand to take around the house make’s it a very versatile option.

The ability to rock your baby and soothe them in the middle of the night, as you lie right next to them, half asleep, could also be really handy.

Any downsides?

Although the bassinet is no bigger than others, the stand design and mechanism make this quite a bulky option, not ideal for small spaces.  If space is limited between the wall and the bed, the bassinet can hover a long way over the bed, but that will of course impact the space in the bed!

The other downside is that those extra features come at quite a price.

All your FAQs on bassinets for small spaces

Can a bassinet be too big for newborn?

No, there’s no maximum size for a bassinet for a newborn – a teeny tiny newborn could well look a bit lost in a bassinet but there are no safety concerns.

Do newborns sleep in cribs or bassinets?

As long as you follow safe sleep guidelines both a crib and bassinet can provide a safe sleep environment for a newborn baby.  A newborn can sleep in either.

There’s no reason not to use a crib from birth, as long as you stay in the room with them until 6 months.

A bassinet can be preferable for a newborn because they’re more portable and smaller, making it easier for them to stay in the same room as you or another caregiver for naps and nighttime sleep.

Do you need a bassinet if you have a mini crib?

If you have a mini crib you may not need a bassinet.  However, you still may find a bassinet useful for daytime naps as you can set it up downstairs.

What age do babies outgrow a bassinet?

Most bassinets are designed for babies up to 4 or 5 months old.  However, it depends on both the size of the baby and the bassinet as well as the weight limit of the bassinet.   You also need to stop using a bassinet when your baby starts to push up as this could overbalance it.

Can baby sleep in bassinet once rolling?

There’s no issue with a baby rolling and using a bassinet. However, if they’re rolling it’s also likely that they’re starting to push up in which case the recommendation is to move them from the bassinet into something bigger and deeper.

How do I pick a safe bassinet?

Follow CPSC guidelines to ensure the bassinet is safe.  Bassinet base must be wide, have a sturdy frame and the surfaces must be smooth with no protruding hardware.  Legs should lock into place to prevent accidental collapse and mattress should be firm and fit snugly.

Should the bassinet be right next to the bed?

The bassinet doesn’t have to be right next to the bed, that’s personal preference.  The only requirement is that your baby is in the same room as you for the first 6 months.

A little about me

Mom of 4 kids, baby sleep expert plus home organisation and kids activities and crafts

Hi, I'm Sarah

Mom of four outrageously gorgeous Littles.  Yup, four!  The twins are now two and that title still brings me out in a cold sweat… Yet I’m just as determined to give them the best without losing my mind.  I reckon it’s possible!  Most days.

I love a challenge and have to find out they ‘why’, ‘what’ or ‘how to’  –  there are rather a lot of these when it comes to kids…

I also love, love, love things to be neat and tidy and just so.   The Littles normally have other ideas!
