What age are these toddler Halloween party ideas aimed at?

Who knows what the official age of a toddler actually is.  I guess as soon as your crawling baby starts toddling, it makes sense to start calling them a toddler, right?! Although some of the Halloween activities will be suitable for tots that tiny, these party ideas are aimed at those a little older.

These are Halloween party ideas for toddlers aged, 2 and 4/5 years old, so for preschoolers too.

Halloween party games for toddlers & preschoolers

Bearing in mind that the concentration span of a preschooler, let alone a toddler, is sub 5 minutes and explaining any rule/game (or just anything) is challenging to say the least, any Halloween party games for toddlers need to be stupidly simple.

Halloween party ideas for toddlers - mystery boxes/buckets

#1 Halloween mystery boxes/buckets

This is such a fun toddler Halloween party idea that kids of all ages will love.  Simply fill your buckets or boxes with something a little bit creepy or

As the party organizer, you can get as creative as you like and make it as revolting as your heart desires!  In our Halloween mystery buckets we had:

  • soapy water with a sock floating around
  • cooked spaghetti with some baked beans and cooked, shredded beetroot thrown in – but any assortment of tinned and canned food would work
  • jello with tinned raspberries mixed in – again, this would work with any number of other tinned foods

Then have your mini party goers guess what’s in the box.

#2 Unwrap the Mummy

A Halloween twist on the classic “pass the parcel”.  Wrap a teddy or doll with short strips of crepe bandage, keeping the ends free so you can tie them together to secure them.  Under each layer hide some candy. When the music stops whoever has the Mummy can unwrap a layer and find their candy.

toddler halloween party ideas - 10 pin pumpkin bowling

#3 Ghostly 10 pin bowling – with a pumpkin (or ball)

Lots of fun to be had for older toddlers and preschoolers drawing faces on some empty milk bottles though I don’t fancy the chances of them being able to roll a pumpkin, but any ball would work…

Pumpkin game for toddlers this Halloween

#4 Pumpkin drop Halloween game

Think a Halloween version of the egg and spoon race – switch the toilet rolls for plastic cups for toddlers struggling to keep the pumpkin from falling.

#5 Pin the XX on the Halloween XX

No party for little kids would be complete without the obligatory pin the tail on the xx game, another classic party game with a Halloween twist.  If you’re feeling creative you could easily DIY one and get your toddler or preschooler involved too, making this a fun Halloween craft and activity as well.

Halloween tin can bowling game for kids

#6 Halloween Tin Can Bowling

A Halloween party idea for toddlers who love a bit of destruction!  (Are there any that don’t?!) For the bigger little ones these spooky characters will make a fun Halloween craft too and will add to the Halloween decor and festival feel.

#7 Halloween dance & freeze

A toddler Halloween party idea to get the kiddos moving – turn on some Halloween tunes and when you stop the music they must freeze in their best spooky pose… In this old party favorite you’d eliminate anyone moving after the music stops, but when can a toddler ever stay still? The game could well be over after a minute or two – so just let them enjoy and hand out a prize to the best spooky pose when they’re worn out.

#9 Make the zombies laugh

This Halloween party idea for toddlers is popular with kids of all ages and will have everyone in fits of laughter.  Get the little ones lying down on the floor, like sleeping zombies…  One toddler/preschooler has to make the zombies laugh by doing silly things like pulling faces or doing a silly dance.

The zombies have to try hard not to laugh. Of course, if you tell a toddler not to do something they’re going to be doing it in seconds before the face-pulling has even started!  So rather than eliminate the first laughing zombie, rather have a prize for the best silliness and just let them laugh themselves silly.

#10 Hunt the spider in the dark

This is a scavenger hunt with a difference!  Hunting for hidden teddies with a torch in the dark is a popular game in our house – a perfect after tea game that keeps our older two busy for up to half an hour – and there’s something about torches that little kids just love.  Just watch out for the littler toddler who still wants to shine the torch in everyone’s eyes.

This is exactly the same, just using plastic spiders.  Simply hide the spiders, draw the curtains and turn the lights off, hand each toddler a torch and get them hunting.

These mini LED torches and plastic spiders will make great Halloween party favors too.

#11 Ghostly sack race

A toddler Halloween party idea to burn off a bit of candy-fuelled energy – which will be much needed I’m sure.  Draw some ghost or monster faces on white pillowcases to use as sacks.  Then get them racing.

Halloween activities for toddlers

Toddlers, preschoolers and even older kids just love to explore just about everything they come across, from poking, to prodding to squishing, scooping, throwing…if you have a toddler I’m sure you have a gazillion other verbs to add to the list.  Irritating though this can often be, it’s entirely normal, natural and healthy behavior.  You need to be one step ahead and have some toddler activities up your sleeve.

So, as well as organizing some good Halloween party games for toddlers and preschoolers, having some good Halloween activities to fill in the gaps are a must, keeping those inquisitive minds and the endless energy channeled into something vaguely constructive rather than entirely destructive! A little about me

Mom of 4 kids, baby sleep expert plus home organisation and kids activities and crafts

Hi, I'm Sarah

Mom of four outrageously gorgeous Littles.  Yup, four!  The twins are now two and that title still brings me out in a cold sweat… Yet I’m just as determined to give them the best without losing my mind.  I reckon it’s possible!  Most days.

I love a challenge and have to find out they ‘why’, ‘what’ or ‘how to’  –  there are rather a lot of these when it comes to kids…

I also love, love, love things to be neat and tidy and just so.   The Littles normally have other ideas!
